n. & adj. --n. 1 a the practice or an act of executing by hanging a person. b (attrib.) meriting or causing this (a hanging offence). 2 (usu. in pl.) draperies hung on a wall etc. --adj. that hangs or is hung; suspended. Phrases and idioms hanging gardens gardens laid out on a steep slope. hanging valley a valley, usu. tributary, above the level of the valleys or plains it joins.
